CE Certification According to the Regulation on Gas Appliances (2016/426/EU)

GAR, published by the European Commission on March 31, 2016, became mandatory in EU countries as of April 21, 2018. Existing GAD CE certificates must be updated to comply with the new GAR Regulation as of April 21, 2018. The GAR, or new regulation, sets out the essential requirements that must be met by any device or equipment intended for sale in the EU market. Its purpose is to ensure that gas-burning appliances, equipment, and components circulate safely and reliably in the EU market. The regulation requires that type testing be conducted by an independent, authorized certification body designated by the European Commission and that the manufacturer select an appropriate conformity assessment module for approval.

What are the definitions and devices covered by 2016/426/EU GAR?

This regulation applies to certain equipment, including gas-burning appliances, regulating and control devices, and sub-assemblies, operating at normal temperatures with any fuel in the gas phase at 1 bar pressure and 15°C. All gas appliances and equipment operating under these conditions and therefore covered by the regulation must bear the CE mark. However, there are certain exceptions to the regulation, including products used for industrial purposes in industrial facilities.

The definitions below help us understand what is and is not covered by the scope.

Gas-burning appliance: Gas-burning appliances used for cooking, cooling, air conditioning, heating, hot water production, lighting, or washing, as well as forced-draft burners and heating elements equipped with such burners.

Equipment: Safety, control, or adjustment devices designed to be installed in an appliance or that form an appliance when installed, and their partial assemblies.

Industrial facility: Any location where the main activity of an industrial process subject to specific national health and safety regulations is carried out.

Industrial process: The obtaining, growing, refining, processing, manufacturing, or preparing of materials, plants, farm animals, animal products, food, or other products for commercial use

Normal use of the device: The device is installed correctly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, maintained regularly, and operated within the normal range of pressure and quality of the gas fuel, and used for its intended purpose or in a reasonable manner.
